Did you change it so the program doesn't exit until the file has finished 
sending?

Try listening to the error() signal from the FileTransfer.

Be sure to send to a full JID: user at host/resource.

Yes, you may use any port.  This port number is sent to the other client over 
jabber.  And you're right, if you have Psi running then this may be why 8010 
is already in use.
