It seems to be known, but we don't know the cause.  Our trayicon x11 code has 
been fully rewritten last year according to the freedesktop spec and the 
problem still persists.  We really need a gnome person to look into this.

And yes, the fact that it works "sometimes" does suggest a timing bug 
somewhere.
