I actually do the same thing, but in addition I use messages if I want
to paste a huge block of text to complement an existing chat (e.g.
code snippet).  Also I occasionally send messages to multiple people,
can't do that with chat.

But I disagree we should change the default behavior, that sounds a
bit "too smart" for people to appreciate the subtleties.
