I think that "dirty" is caused by the hard gradient that is used (bright
yellow to black in such a small icon)
A less hard gradient or no gradien like remko made
(http://spike.ulyssis.org/tmp/stellar1.png) look less 'dirty'.

Yes, they should be intuitive !!
Chat: Rockets (Stellar) and stars (Crystal) are not intuitive
Message: Wiggling star (Stellar) is not good. Envelope (Crystal) is better.
Error Msg: Flashing red screen icon is not good. The exclamation mark
(danger sign) of Crystal is useful. Another idea might be a
'lightning'-icon which can also refer to an 'error'.
An idea for a chat icon: maybe also something with an envelope? or
several envelopes behind each other? But maybe this is not so intuitive
because ppl might think that an icon with several envelopes means there
are several msg's in the queue..
