Isn't it possible to make the current list into a tree? So you click on 
your current status and then you get a popup list with:

Online ->
Free For Chat ->
----
Away ->
etc

if you click on the arrow/triagle you'll get a list with all the presets 
that you created for this status. If you just click on the status 
(Online, Away, etc) Psi uses the default status message.

IMO this is more intuitive and will keep the interface clean.
