Right, the ideal situation as I see it is to minimise clicks for frequently used messages, while not requiring too many for less frequently used ones. We also need to obviously not use too much space, as moving the mouse is as much hassle as clicking it :)

So..
The status menu should (in my oh-so-not-humble opinion) have the 5 or 6 most recent full status options (type&message) at the bottom (irrespective of whether it comes from custom or presets), with the status types above that, each tree-ing into the presets and 'custom'. *Maybe* in between these there should be user-defined 'quick'-presets (which would be excempt from entry into the recent list).
My points:
Yes, this is multiple clicks for the presets.
Yes, this is multiple clicks for custom.
It's the bare minimum of clicks for the most frequent/recent options. It's rare I think for me to choose outside my three or four most regular presets.
More fuel for the fire please :)
