I'm new to the list, but IMVHO : what psi definietly needs is ability to
set by the user colors for almost everything. This gives an impression
on customizing YOURS (as a user) IM.

Some time ago skazi wrote a patch : nicechats-mod.diff (available from:
ftp://ftp.patryk.one.pl/pub/psi/skazi/patches/good/psi-nicechats-mod.diff ).
For psi-gentoo I wrote a little patch that gives ability to change text
color in chatdlg with respect to who is sending a message (you or your
contact). I think this would be really nice to see it official psi
release.

For an impression how it looks like, I made a screenshot from my psi
(nicechats-mod + psi-chatdlg_messages_colors_distinguishes +
psi-messages_color_backgrounds_in_chat).

Please - consider using these patches, as they gives more 'color power'
of profiling psi to user.
