No, there isn't. I use predefined symbols since VC++6 without problem.

That's because manifest file constant was introduced in Microsoft
Platform SDK in year 2001, and You have to have and use either Platfrom
SDK dated after year 2001 (You may use Visual Studio 6) or Visual Studio
.NET 2002 or later (however, I'm not so sure about VS.NET2002).
