He means MMB on the tray icon, which you don't use :)

LMB = dock or undock the contact list
MMB = receive pending message
RMB = context menu

About receiving message with LMB:
1) It makes it easier for people with 1 or 2 buttons. This is correct. Else, they wouldn't have a 
fast way to receive messages.

2) On the other hand, this introduces ambiguity
a) LMB would result in dock/undock if there is no pending event
b) LMB would result in receive message if there is a pending event.
Don't think this is in line with usability guidelines.
