I think there is a compromise which isn't hard to do: provide an extra combobox
for the toolbar containing all (or the most popular) status presets + an
'Other...' field with which pops up the status dialog. Since a preset is
bound to a status (and a priority), choosing a preset will automatically 
set you to 'Away' or 'DND' or so.

We talked about this earlier. Other people wanted more in the combobox back
then, but the more i think about it, the more it makes sense to just keep it
preset-only.
