Why not use an editable combo box? I believe the original idea of this
line was to quickly enter another message, since it's already accessible
very fast. Just focus it (either per mouse or hotkey), enter a message
and press <Enter>, done. Or focus it, select a message (using
mouse+dropdown or arrow keys) and press <Enter>.

Maybe this could even be combined in some way with the current 'set
status' dropdown menu to have it all in one place?
