Eating up space from the Chatview would make the top lines disappear (you'll
always want the last line to be visible, won't you?). The first lines you
wrote in the edit box would also move up.
A user does not expect text to be disappearing from the screen when he enters
something. I also haven't seen any (modern) editor where you write on a line
and the text already written moves up. The expected direction is down, or the
user would be confused by the visual changes that occur in the window.
Once you use it, you'll never want to change it. The iChat devs knew something
when they introduced this feature.
