iChat hashes the vCard. I am not sure if it sends the extra packet in
the <presence /> stanza anytime anything changes in the vCard, but it
could be done that way.
In my opinion we have a proper way to deliver graphical information
about the user, which is the <PHOTO /> field of the vCard. And I think
that a way to announce this data has changed - nickname, photo or
whatever - is a good idea.
I suppose the easiest way of publishing that is the presence packet,
because the server broadcasts the presence packet to all your contacts
sending it once. In fact the <presece /> stanza is defined as a "as a
basic broadcast or 'publish-subscribe' mechanism".
I wish that way of publishing the vCard change was redacted and
proposed as a JEP. That way we could broadcast our data change,
without that (complicated) pub-sub stuff...
