I would rather see different versions of jisps available. Staying only with
a few image formats, we already have:
Fixed Size
======
- static gif
- animated gif
- jpeg
- motion jpeg (well, we don't have this, but it completes the list...)
- png
- mng (animated png -- this should replace the Psi hack of png IMHO)
Scalable
======
- SVG
- SVG animation
Other Possibilities
======
Flash
EPS
Acrobat
WMF
BMP, ICO
XPM, PPM
Anyhow, since we don't have any base requirements for Jabber clients to
support for image types (including PNGs), I would be more inclined to
distribute different sets of jisps for different clients/platforms. As a
packager, if Psi works on my platform with SVG, I don't want to distribute
jisps with PNGs and SVGs -- I only want to distribute the SVG jisps.
Conversely, if I can only use PNGs, I don't want to distribute SVGs too.
If we are to encourage jisp compatibility, there needs to be an agreement to
what all clients conforming to the jisp specification *must* support for
image types. If there isn't a list of image types that all jisp-enabled
clients can display, then including compatibility images isn't going solve
the problem for all clients unless you distribute all image formats in your
jisp, which is completely impractical.
