I just introduced a friend to Psi. It's been awhile since I've freshly
installed Psi, but there are a few concerns that came to mind while I
walked him through it. They're not related to a new account wizard which
would be nice, but some things that could be done now.
The first was that the add account dialog was not automatically
displayed so he was lost as to what to do. So if I create a new profile
the add account dialog/process should automatically be displayed.
The second was that he did not know what a JID was. I guess he entered a
username without a server into the Jabber ID box. This would most likely
be addressed in the wizard work when that is done, but whenever the work
is done things should be broken up into user and server boxes. With a
wizard I would presume the last screen would tell the user that people
can contact them at so and so JID showing them the actual combination.
Another one was the SSL checkbox. Should we enable this by default?
Finally, my friend was behind a NAT. He needed to setup a proxy to
transfer files. Should this setting be made more apparent, and if
possible detect if one is needed and available and set it up for him
without him having to do anything?
A side note: I told him to register an account at jabber.org and he went
to their website, so I guess that goes along with the previous thread
about the add account wizard. I guess with the ability to create
accounts on the web the Jabberd ID concern could be moot since the
website would probably say "this is your JID:" along with any other
settings, ie: data transfer proxy, etc.
