Initially, when you have a few open chats, actually you lose a lot of space.

These points are valid.

And I think either Gajim or Gaim support vertical tabs too, but I was unable 
to find this feature on publically available web screenshots.

Most likely it was Gajim: it wasn't pretty, but it was functional. But I 
didn't like the lack of scrollbar, it had two buttons on top and bottom to 
scroll tabs.

We need to address all of this. World domination, here we go!
