I would rephrase that to something like this:

"To join an existing session, choose a recently detected session or type in a 
session's name. [Otherwise,] To start a new session, leave the field blank."

We're more of an "otherwise" type crowd around here, although its use is 
optional in the way I wrote the instructions above.
