Don't feel stupid. I had the same problem a few months ago, seeing
contacts just 'disappear' when signing on. Took me a while to figure
out what was going on as well. It's a horrible option, especially when
you can have 'show away' off and 'show offline' on.
It's no longer in the default toolbar or menu in 0.11 (but can be
enabled for the die-hard fans, although i strongly doubt anyone really
uses it).
