Yes, that might be useful too. It also makes sense to do this if you
consider that a contact might be in different groups, and you want it
to only show up once.

Another alternative, less intrusive, is the GMail-Talk approach: when
you enter something in a box, another widget pops up with the filtered
names, and you can then select a contact from there. But then again,
you can only do one operation on the list (click), so the roster
approach is definitely a lot better.
