I found the way it was handled via a contributed patch in 0.10 very intuitive. 
Simply open the context menu of a contact, navigate to the "Group" entry, 
where you see all available groups (just like it works in 0.11). 

Groups the contact is already in are ticked off. Selecting an unticked group 
adds the contact to that group, selecting a ticked group removes the contact 
from that group. 

This may get cumbersome when you want to manage a contact in many groups, 
because it requires the procedure to be repeated for every group the contact 
should end up in (or be removed from), but that's a one-time thing.

What would be nice is to be able to select multiple contacts at once 
(Ctrl-click here) and assign a group to all selected contacts, using the 
method described above.
