yeah I do have auto open enable. Maybe psi could disable auto open if
the user is auto away?
Cos this behaviour is really weird.

I am using qt4.3.0 with a few revisions old svn version.
Slackware Linux 12, KDE 3.5 , kwm (I guess! )

The psi button just hides... right click on the toolbar, move the psi
button to rightmost point (so that it can auto hide) (in the configure
part you will have to move it to the bottom of the list) and now
decrease roster size until 2-3 icons are now hidden. And check out the
psi button.

If you still can't see , change the default config ... remove the
whole set status big button and replace it with a series of small
icons (alternatively move the psi button to the upper toolbar the one
which has 'show away' , 'show status msg' etc. etc. and disable the
lower toolbar and then decrease size).
