Yeah the whole code is really messed up :)

I think thats why there is a task to write unittests for it , as the
code is very fragile. If the unittests are available , then porting to
Qt::escape / mblsha's code shouldn't be difficult. I tried but never
could get the configure script to realise that I have cpp-unit.

hmm, what chars are that ? cos isn't TextUtil::escape supposed to be
the latest and greatest ?:)
