FWIW, I've heard our end-users (in Wisconsin) call it "sigh" (tends 
towards advanced users) and "pee-ess-eye" (tends towards n00b users). 
It's kind of confusing and awkward from a support perspective.  With 
Pidgin being the most popular alternative client, I can't help to wonder 
if it has something to do with the name.  Anecdotally, Pidgin seemed to 
get more popular around the time that they renamed it; but that might 
have been for other reasons.
