Ah hah, I've always wondered why it got stuck, so I took a look again just 
now.  It seems to hang when the plugin is asked to initialize a second time.  
This is strange because if the plugin fails to init then the .so is unloaded 
from memory and subsequent attempts should happen from scratch.  But maybe 
unloading .so files doesn't work that way in reality and some state lingers.
